Polar Bear

The 2001 Polar Bear was warmer than most, but a forecast rain held off and campers still had plenty of snow in the woods of Huron County.

Mr. Jim Haas again allowed the troop to utilize the woods on his family's farm north of East Townsend, Ohio. Many of the shagbark hickory trees in the grove where we camped were planted by Mr. Haas as a boy.

Only 10 scouts opted for this camp, led by Senior Patrol Leader Ian Duncan and Troop Guide John Holchin. First-time "bears" had no problem building their shelters, lighting a fire and cooking. The only hint of trouble was in getting them to sleep Saturday night with many staying awake into the wee hours talking and telling stories.

There was even a late afternoon visit from one of the wild creatures in the forest...a lone opossum wandered past the camp and stopped for a while to observe and be observed.
