Lumberjack Camp

Sometimes it's the younger Scouts that come up great ideas for activities. Since last winter tenderfoot scout Owen Minnis has promised to orgainze a camp for September. He followed through in a big way as the troop hacked out a camp in a private woods west of Wakeman, Ohio and spent the weekend living the life of lumberjacks.

With the permission of the landowner, small trees were selectively thinned to enhance the health of his woods. Downed wood was cleared and various manly competitions took place. After a day of sawing through logs with a two-man saw, a big batch of dutch oven biscuits really topped off a hearty supper.

Randy Minnis, Owen's dad, showed off some carving and talked about forest management.
