Polar Bear

Finally, a winter camp in winter weather!

The 1999 Polar Bear had to be one of the best ever, with almost 3 feet of snow covering Beaumont Scout Reservation. For the first time in many years Scouts had the option of building their shelters with snow.

For the younger boys, plastic tarp lean-tos with packed snow walls provided a cozyb sleep Saturday night. For three Eagle Scouts, their night in a snow shelter was a little wet as the insulation was a bit too good.

The snow shelter built by Chip DuMound, Bryan Machala and Mike Zayd was an impressive and imposing structure. However, failure to vent it properly meant indoor rain overnight as body heat began melting the snow cave from the inside out.

Blame the Scoutmaster, who missed the fun because of work....maybe next year.
